Why? I believe Meteor is the future of app development. After developing with a myriad of previous web technologies for 20+ years, finding Meteor has been a breath of fresh air.
Some time around 2000, I got super excited when I found that in Flash and Flex, you could take the result of a web service call and bind parts of it to UI controls in your app. I thought to myself, “This is a real time saver!” because I didn’t have to write any code to make the UI updates happen when the data layer changed. That act of binding made the application simpler, development faster, and customers happier. The bottom line, however, was that it made me more money by giving me a faster velocity.
Imagine my euphoria coming across Meteor and realizing that I could ‘bind’ data all the way from the server database to the UI! Say what?!
Even though I was excited about data binding, I still had another frustration. The server side logic and database were always some other platforms, for which I needed another language and usually had to figure out interfaces between them.
Again, imagine the triumph I felt knowing that Meteor is End-to-End JavaScript!
At the risk of alienating the non-technical, here is a table associating my reactions with Meteor’s functionality:
I think that about covers it. To summarize that bottom line again, this means white hot velocity for prototyping as well as production development.
